This Moment ~ Fever and Cough and Breathing Treatments

{this moment} – Tucked in here most Fridays, photos from an ordinary, or not so ordinary, moment from the week. A moment I want to linger on, press into, and offer thanks for..

This week was a quieter, slower week as 2 of our sweet ladies were hit again with the fever and cough producing virus.  For the first time in two years we broke out the nebulizer and albuteral for a breathing treatment.  Ick.  But I am thankful, so thankful, for all that we need; peaceful home, medical care, motrin, warm tea and plenty of soft cheek strokes.

Quiet activity continued, with plenty of stories and a few dvds mixed in.

Just a Minute ~ Touching the Life of a Child

Just a Minute, is a new book by Dr. Wess Stafford. In this book he shares stories that back his belief that every time a child crosses paths with us there is the potential for a divine appointment, the opportunity to impact that life in a life giving, or life snuffing way.

As I have read through this book, I have been inspired to give more thought to the life giving words that can be shared more often, on a daily basis. One day, as I was reading, I had to put the book down and immediately write a letter to our sponsor daughter, Lesbia, to spend those next moments encouraging her.  Another time I had to put the book aside to look at my daughter  while she talked to me, to let her know that she is heard.   Because, as Dr Stafford is urging the reader to understand, those moments are extremely important.

And as it does so often happen, reading this book has me on the lookout for others, who take just a minute.   Recently at the dojo, the black belt instructor had to step away from the class.  Our 10 year old Petal Rose (higher ranking belt than the rest of us) was asked by Kyoshi to take the class through a kata.  That in itself could have been a terrible thing, she is a soft spoken, reserved young lady.

It was the way in which he called her out, communicating with his tone and few words how confident he was in her ability to lead this part of the class.  And then, the beauty of the next moment.  It was time to do the kata again, and the instructors were back in place, Kyoshi asked Petal Rose to lead it again, because she had done it very well.
023Petal Rose’s face grew a bit redder, but her shoulders rose a little higher, her back straighter, and her voice was a little stronger.
This momma’s heart sung with joy, to know others can see the strength, ability and beauty in that quiet young lady. It is a blessing to see others sow encouragement into the hearts of my children. As I write these words, another thought enters my mind.
Watching others encourage my children blessed me with hope. As parents we are not in this alone. And when we pray for our sponsor children, and write to them, and tell them that they are beautiful and intelligent and loved, I realize, we are partnering with their families, communicating the same hope.
Hope, a powerful gift that can be given in Just a Minute.

Berry Orange Oatmeal Bread

Recently Mary Oysten from Owlhaven posted a recipe to make bread from leftover oatmeal.  One morning this past week we had leftover Blueberry Orange Oatmeal and I decided to give her recipe a try.  I did have to make some adjustments.  My recipe is at the bottom of this post… but there is a link above to access the original recipe at Owlhaven.

My family is thrilled with this bread, it is moist, but slices beautifully. We enjoyed one loaf the day I made it, some with butter, some without.  It was great either way.  And it will be perfect for peanut butter sandwiches later in the week.

Berry Orange Oatmeal Bread

Makes 2 loaves

Ingredients

1 cup cooked oatmeal, cooled to lukewarm
 2 tsp yeast
 1 T coconut sugar
2  cups hot tap water (about 110-115 degrees)(used 3/4c orange juice and added water to get 2 cups)
 2 teaspoons salt
6-7 cups fresh ground red wheat (or unbleached all-purpose flour)

Let oatmeal cool to lukewarm. Meanwhile, stir the yeast and sugar into the warm water until dissolved, and allow to sit for 5-10 minutes, or until the yeast has created a bubbly foam on top of the water. Add the warm liquid, salt, brown sugar, and yeast mixture to the oats and stir well. Then stir in 6 cups of flour, 1 cup at a time.

Turn out on a floured board. Knead until the dough feels smooth, pliable and elastic. You may need to add up to one cup more flour if necessary to get the right feel. Shape the dough into a ball, put into a well-buttered bowl, and turn to coat on all sides. Cover and let rise in a warm, draft-free place until doubled in bulk, 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Punch the dough down. Knead for 2 or 3 minutes and shape into two loaves. Thoroughly butter two 8 x 4 x 2-inch pans (bread pans). Place the dough in the pans, cover, and let rise in a warm place until almost doubled in bulk.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees, place the bread in the center of the lowest rack, and bake for about 45 to 50 minutes, until the loaves sound hollow when tapped on top and bottom with the knuckles. Remove the loaves to a rack to cool. If you want a very soft top crust, brush the loaves with melted butter when you bring them out of the oven.

Swiftly Flows the River of Grace

There are those weeks where life sweeps like a swift river, and although it is mostly good, the time to think & write just gets swept into cleaning the broken glass, enjoying the extra hours of fellowship gifted by traveling husbands, kneading the daily bread and wiping tears over lessons in schooling that might not really matter, or do they?  That’s a question often in my head.  But still we count, because God is good and has gifted so generous and abundantly.

Measurements Help ~ Mr Gallon

This is the most popular page on my blog!  It cracks me up that everyday that I take a look, my stats list Mr Gallon as the most viewed page by far.

Have you ever met this guy?  We discovered him 2 or 3 years ago when Mae was deep in the learning to exchange cups for pints for quarts for gallons in all those challenging math word problems.  Now it is Petal Rose’s turn and since I am printing Mr Gallon for her notebook, I thought I’d share him here,

You’ll need to scroll pretty far down the page to find him 🙂
