Out of Breath, An Open Heart Surgery Story

Mitral Valve Prolapse with Regurgitation was diagnosed when I was about 18 years old and planning for college.  At that time, I was surprised, but the doctor assured me that MVP is a fairly common heart murmur and not to worry about it at all.  Twelve years later it became a much different story.  May 1 is my 11 Valviversary, 11 years since Open Heart Surgery.

It was lovely early fall day, and I just couldn’t imagine how the wee one growing inside me was already pushing up so hard, making it hard for me to catch my breath.  At six months pregnant, one doesn’t expect that to happen just yet.  It took me by surprise that after walking down to the neighborhood 7-11 for a newspaper one morning, I was unable to walk back home.

The next day I placed a call into my doctor, asking for some exercises I could do to move the baby, because all the things I already knew (this was a baby #4) were not working.  It did not get my attention yet, although looking back it should have, but it was my doctor who called back not the nurse.  Dr. Weary told me he had made arrangements for me to see a cardiologist the next day.

Looking for Spring in the Trees

This weekend I took a stroll around through the yards and found further evidence of SPRING!  I enjoy the trees we have around the house year round, but find myself particularly excited to see buds and new leaves.

Happy Monday

Welcome to this new week.  I sure am looking forward to our co-op wrapping up for this semester, freeing up some time to be at home more.  Two more weeks.  We have a definite case of summer fever, although we have five weeks left in this school year.

Do you see the two new items on the sidebar?  It has taken a little while, but I’ve learned a little more about blogging on wordpress.

Some college students had a rip roaring party next door this weekend and some of the party attendees threw liquor bottles over our fence. The bottles hit our new patio and the sidewalk, shattering. I am so thankful that my daughter had shoes on the following morning when she head out to care for the flock. We reported the mess to the police, as we have had problems in the past with those neighbors. Anyway, that used up several hours to clean up.

On a better note, Builder and I have been spending a lot of time researching and putting a plan together for a summer trip with our kids.  It may be this summer, or the next, but I hope to be able to share about it soon!

Well, here are my goals for this week, the same as last.

As always, I am pleased with the lack of static cling.  And the scent is quite nice.

It is time to start washing and putting away some of the winter bedding and I am interested to see if the promise of 30 days of long-lasting freshness is true.  It will be fun to pull out blankets for summer camping and see if they still smell fresh!  We always need some warmer blankets for those cold mountain nights.

Weekly Goals April 21-26

Happy Resurrection Monday (yes I am stretching out the celebration for one more day)

My beautiful daughtersHow are your goals coming along? I do hope that they are a guide, but not a taskmaster, allowing you to travel along life intentionally and with purpose, and also with flexibility. Each week, actually every day, I have to remember that my goals keep me on track of an intentional purposeful life, but also allows me flexibility without worry. This past week it doesn’t look as though I accomplished much on my goals, but a full week of life and productivity did take place. A good week of schooling and work was accomplished, shopping for clothing was completed (for now) and some wonderful fellowship took place. Our household of ladies (hubby is out of town working) traveled to the city north to visit with my oldest daughter and her boyfriend. We visited the Botanic Gardens and thoroughly enjoyed each other and the sunshine. Thankfully I still found regular time to read, and finished one of the books on my stack. Now it is Monday, here’s to another try at the goals!

Frozen, Some Thoughts from a Mom of Many Sisters

Tags

,

Watching animated movies is not an enjoyable pastime for me. Maybe it’s the years of parenting young children with very little adult interaction, or the ridiculous “happy ever after” ending to most of the movies, but I find it much like fingernails on a chalkboard to sit through an entire animated movie.

That said I do try to get out with my kids once or twice a year to see a “new” movie.   Prior to the arrival of Frozen to the movie theaters I had heard from at least one of my kids about how much she wanted to see the movie. So I made a plan, armed myself with plenty of chocolate for comfort & distraction, and took my youngest three daughters to see the movie.

Oh, my word. I LOVED this movie. My kids were pretty surprised, maybe concerned, when I drove straight home and purchased the Frozen soundtrack on iTunes. And as soon as the movie came out on DVD, I was looking for a good deal to purchase Frozen on blue ray. (Thanks to TopCashBack, I got the great deal of FREE).

While I loved the movie and the soundtrack, I must say that the song Let It Go, out of the context of the movie, is quickly growing old and concerning. All the videos on the internet of girls singing the song have me concerned with the attitude that grows with the lyrics out of context. I think it is a good thing to remember to chat with our kids about the lyrics just a bit. Go ahead and put a little eternal focus into the song.

As I am sure is the same in many other households, references to the movie often pop into conversations. Recently a couple of my daughters were discussing the icy heart. I do not even remember what exactly they were saying because my own wheels started spinning.

When Elsa accidentally freezes Anna’s head, in large part due to Anna’s exuberance, little damage is done. But later in the movie, after years of painful distance between the sisters, Elsa zaps Anna and as a result, Anna’s heart begins to freeze. Fatal damage occurs, and there is no cure except an act of true love.

How often does that happen between sisters, spouses, and friends? Words are flung; important dates are forgotten, again, and a host of other injuries are inflicted on one that is precious and much loved. And what can cure a deep heart wound but love?

And not romantic love, but true sacrificial love. It brought me so much joy that the act of true love was done by the wounded sister, to save the one who wounded her.

That is just what Christ has done for us. We who are filthy, unkind and even downright mean are sinking in our broken hurtful ways, and He sacrificed Himself to save us.  This Easter I hope you will more than reflect on the sacrificial love that was poured out to save each of us from our sinful “frozen” hearts.

Medical Care and Poverty

The following video captures the emotion and thoughts I often have.  My youngest had a tremendous struggle her first year of life, and I am so thankful for the medical care that is available to us.

One of the many reasons we are sponsors through Compassion International is to be able to bring medical care to other children, and to partner with their parents to raise a healthy child.

I hope that after watching the video you will take a moment to visit Compassion International on the web and learn a little more about the organization.

Backyard Barnyard, New Additions

Our youngest has a friend or two with certain little critters and there have been hints and requests from time to time to add to our menagerie.  This weekend we decided that Daddy and Marme are ready to take on a new venture

Builder renovated one of the chicken coops into a rabbit lodge.  I’ll have pictures of that in a week or two.

We also did some work in the garden and got the strawberry bed ready for planting.  Mae & Builder planted 10 Everbearing Strawberry Plants.

Happy Monday! Goals for April 6 – 12

Life around our home is always eventful. Those “quiet waters” of the river of life have so many bends and little pebbly beaches to pull up on and explore! We did start Anne of Green Gables and found that the chapters are too long to be read over one dinner read aloud time. So we are breaking up the chapters over 2 days, and enjoying the story immensely. A couple of us have read the entire series before, but there are others around our table who have not. It is so fun to remember the story as we go, and to be sharing it together! If you haven’t read the Anne of Green Gables books before, give them a try this summer or spring! The Bonhoeffer audio book has taken me nearly 2 months to listen to so far. It has me thinking a lot about World War II from the perspective of the Church rather than the political point of view from high school history.

After I pinned binding to 2 sides of the new cousin quilt I looked at the calendar. Oh my, I had thought I had another week or 2 to get my 13 year old’s skirt finished for Easter. We had been putting it off, waiting for a couple of hours where I could work with her and let her sew it. Well that didn’t happen so I am working on it.

skirt projectAfter reading Notes from a Blue Bike I requested a couple of books from the library. “The $100 Startup” was available early in the week and I have not been able to put it down. There is so much information that is encouraging me in a couple of endeavors.  Slowly I am also making my way through a couple others in this picture.April Reading List

Pray for me? I am working on sharing the story of my open heart surgery nearly 11 years ago, and preparing a speech that I am to give in mid May.

My new camera is a wonderful tool, and while I am enjoying it, I don’t think I have even begun to understand all that I can do with it!

How are your goals coming along. I do hope that they are a guide, but not a taskmaster, allowing you to travel along life with intentional and purpose, and also flexibility.

First Signs of Spring, The Garden

Tags

,

The same day I took a walk to visit the trees in our yard, I also passed through the garden.  It was exciting to see the green popping up, and also sobering to see how much work needs to be done to clean up the garden & prepare it for planting. Hopefully we’ll get a good start on that this weekend.
