Winter projects are a great way to take advantage of all the indoor time of cold winter evenings! Over the last two months I was able to wrap up one project that had been long lingering on the sewing table.
I also started, and finished, another sewing project. {sweet success!}
This past holiday season we enjoyed celebratory meals in our new kitchen. I found myself wanting to dress up the table more festive, and was very puzzled over not being able to find the Christmas table cloth! Thinking it was mistakenly purged during the deep de-cluttering that goes with gutting 3 major areas of a home, I decided I needed to replace it. So after looking around the internet for a few ideas, I got to work. After Christmas, I found several cheerful patterned cotton fabrics marked way down.
I’ve decided on place mats for now, maybe a new table cloth later.
After cutting some of the place mats I had a nice piece of “scrap” fabric. From it I cut 3 12×12 pieces. This is a little smaller than the standard cloth napkin size, but I think it will work just fine.
I’m going to try to finish the napkins in March, before spring break! If that doesn’t happen, it will become a summer project, ha!
I would love to hear what projects you’ve been working on, during this Long. Cold. Season to chase away the winter blues.
Hope you will share in the comments!

What I’m Into February 2015 Edition
So it is March 3, I am a little late to the conversation yet again. But that is okay I think. February was a rougher month, lots of snow, cold and gray skies along with cancellations and some of the blues. But the sun does shine again, encouragement is given and received and we press on toward spring and joy! Here is February in a nutshell:
Read and Reading:
Own Your Life by Sally Clarkson, Fringe Hours by Jessica N Turner, Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan (audiobook)
Currently reading: Made for Heaven, Your Beautiful Heart, I Dared to Call Him Father, The Magna Charta
(I completed _3_ books this month)
TV:
Hmm, my kids got me hooked on Once Upon A Time and we binged on the show every Thursday & Friday evening…getting through all 3 seasons on Netflix. The kids have moved on to Star Trek & Classic Dr Who, but I am “fasting” from Netflix for awhile. I don’t like how pulled into that show I found myself! While I enjoyed sharing the time with my daughters, I missed the time of reading together or sewing.
Music:
I am pretty excited about children’s music once again. My grand daughter has enjoyed the Linda Arnold cds and the Bear Tunes that I pulled out recently.
Things I Loved in February:
Snow! Lots of snow
Celebrating a 14th Birthday!!
And going to our Tuesday & Wednesday afternoon home school co op classes. Actually I hang out and the kids go to classes.
In the Blogosphere:
Christmas time is my favorite season
The science behind that crazy viral dress.
On The Blog:
A giveaway of a book that has meant a lot to me in this new year
A funny book for boy families that I received
May my hard heart awake thy pity, not thy wrath.
Well that is what I’m Into this February 2015. Thank you for reading, and please, share with in the comments some highlights from your February, or join the community at Leigh’s

This Moment, a moment to remember, to celebrate, as I thought this week begin picking up the needles again, redeeming some of those moments waiting in the car pool lane, or passing a few minutes with a teen in the car before she dashes off for another round of classes.
Inspired by the new book Fringe Hours by Jessica Turner, I’ve been on the look out for my own #fringehours. It ‘s been a long while since I picked up a set of knitting needles and a ball of yarn, but this week I found a simple pattern, took a few minutes to pull a set of needles out of the tub on the top closet shelf and managed to remember to put the items in the van!
Never have I been an accomplished knitter, but I do enjoy the craft. One afternoon this week I had a few minutes with my 15 year old daughter, just waiting in the van. I pulled out the needles and yarn and let her refresh me on seed stitch. Sweet precious moment!

Joining Jessica at the Mom Creative for Fringe Hours This Week!
It’s been a more stressful week than most. It is the time of year where we submit the proposed schedules for our children in a hybrid dual enrollment school. I knew that it would be a bit more work this year, with one starting part time college while in high school, one starting high school and another starting middle school.
Whew.
Then we got a curve ball from the state that mixed things up more than a bit! But it’s Friday and after working long and late in several big blocks of time, some tears from disappointed & confused teens, I think each daughter’s schedule is mapped out. The only thing we have to wait for now is the college advising appointment to register for college classes (just 2 I think, to start). We also have to wait to see the school adviser’s reply to confirm or tweak the schedules based on overall enrollment.
This morning I woke a little late and decided to work on my new muffin recipe for breakfast with a little Celtic radio.
It was so relaxing to mix the ingredients and mess around with the measurements of the vanilla and cinnamon.
It was so restful and refueling to spend a half hour just being creative and making something nourishing for my family.
Have you found any fringe hours this week, a little time to soak up encouragement and refreshment? Please share in the comments!

Tacos, chili, rice & beans, or nachos, those are our favorite go-to meals during busy weeks. Before I found the idea for making delicious seasoning at home, we always used Pace Picante sauce for flavoring those dishes. Now, Pace Picante sauce is tasty, but we can go through a decent size jar in one meal!
I have tweaked and adapted a seasoning recipe from Laura over at Heavenly Homemakers, to come up with one that my family enjoys. A recipe card is at the end of this post, but first, here is how I make it:
Chili Powder
Onion Powder
Ground Cumin
Garlic Powder
Paprika
Salt (I use Maldon Salt Flakes)
Crushed Red Pepper
Oregano
I layer each ingredient in my 4 cup measuring jar. Then sift.
After the seasoning is all sifted and mix, using a funnel I pour it into a glass jar.
Important, before each use, make sure the lid is on tight. And shake the jar to make sure all the ingredients are mixed. Some settling does occur.
The recipe!

White Chili has become a family favorite, or at least a favorite of the ladies of the home! My hubby is a beef guy through and through, but he does enjoy this chili with a large dose of Louisiana Hot Sauce! Beef or not, we are a beany family, hee hee.
Since being treated to this new to us spin on Chili by my sweet sister in law, we’ve put it into our monthly rotation of meals, and of course changed it up a little. Here is the recipe for the homemade Chili Seasoning.
Let me know if you try this recipe and what you think of it. I’d also love to hear what others top their chili with!

What are the voices each of us hear as we go about our days? Are they the voice of truth, or of error?
Here is a quick test, to assess the voices you may be hearing this day:
Do the voice mock you? Mocking your abilities, skills, knowledge? How about mocking your calling or vision? Do they mock your devotion to the task before you? The work you do?
Do they tear down your confidence?
Do those voices even threaten and intimidate you?
If so, do you find that discouragement creeps in and it begins to choke out joy, peace, HOPE?
Our pastor is preaching a series through the book of Nehemiah, and this past week, he taught from Nehemiah 4. In this passage, Nehemiah is leading people to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem. Voices of opposition rise up against the work, until discouragement began to choke out the hope of workers.
In this narrative we are given an example of how to respond when facing opposition, when the voices of lies and discouragement rise louder.
When the mocking begins, take it to God. Don’t run to this person or that person. Go to the ONE who has given life and purpose. That isn’t to say that we don’t get counsel and support from trusted friends, but God is the One who can work in the hearts of people, He is the One who can help and direct us to help. We need to go to Him first.
Interested in the prayer Nehemiah lifted to God? It is found in verses 4 & 5
“Hear, O our God, for we are despised; turn their reproach on their own heads, and give them as plunder to a land of captivity! 5 Do not cover their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before You; for they have provoked You to anger before the builders.” Nehemiah 4:4, 5 NKJV
Now those are pretty strong words, and don’t seem to pair up well with New Testament passages that say “pray for your enemies.” After hearing the sermon and giving this some thought I remembered a prayer that I pray at times, a request that “God shut the mouth of the liars.” Not quite the same as Nehemiah’s prayer, but strong nevertheless.
Also, Ephesians 6 tells us that our battles are not actually with flesh and blood, so when I pray “shut the mouth of the liar(s), there is one particular liar who is the father of all lies.
The next point I found in Nehemiah 4 is this, challenges and opposition may and will continue. And we are to continue to pray, and to persist. Go back to God, and continue on. Prayer and Persistence.
Now, the opposition may continue still, even escalating to threats and intimidation. Nehemiah did not back down. And we are not to back down, nor run and hide. Nehemiah set up a guard and prepared to meet the threats, but he also continued on. Prayer. Persistence. Preparation. The lesson we can take from this, is that we must continue on, even if we have to work with one hand and hold an item of defense in the other hand.
I have struggled a bit in the writing of this, as there is a very literal physical realm of opposition, mocking, threats and intimidation. But I also want to acknowledge that often, that voice of opposition is in.our.minds. Yes, the battles that rage in our minds. And we must know how to combat those voices of, with what is true, or we become discourage. Discouragement leads to a loss of strength, fear sets in. The result, a loss of vision and purpose.
Here is something that came to my mind as I listened and studied.
I am. You are. strategically placed, to do that work which I/you have been given to do.
#strategicallyplaced You and I are.
I am #strategicallyplaced to mother my children, to care for and encourage the children in my circle of influence.
So when the voices rise, I ask you to remember where you have been #strategicallyplaced, and do not give up. nor give in to fear. Pray. Prepare. Persist. Don’t give up!
One last word of encouragement for you today: God has not given you a spirit of fear. But of power. Of love. Of a sound mind.
Now your turn. Tell me, where have you been #strategicallyplaced?
