Open our Eyes

Reading Just a Minute these past 2 months has inspired me to look back, to pray for the clouds in my memories to be blown away and to remember minutes, moments of life giving.  A little trickle has made it’s way out.Like stones across a river, were the moments sown into me during my 3 of my high school years by a few adults shepherding a group of young people.  Doug and Patti Irvin were the youth pastors during those years, investing their time and Christlike affection with a bunch of kids.

Maybe Doug and Patti had some ideas as to who “that” girl really was; maybe they only saw the contradictions as the young lady grasped at truth, and at the same time played with alcohol, drugs and boys.  Whatever they thought, they showed love, they shared truth, week after week.
The time they took to speak truth and teach Scripture made those 3 years a place of quieter waters sandwiched in a life of chaos, abuse, acting out and outright rebellion.  The seeds fell deep, waiting for the time when God would peel back hard sin sick layer after layer to set a scaled, walled up heart free.
Life has been a roaring river filled with much debris, it has been gentle quiet waters where my heart has been softened.  I am learning to look deep, to see the life, the graces along the journey, and to see with wide open eyes the wonder and glory all around, here, today.

Father, open our eyes, to the wonder and glory all around.  The grace you poured out in the past, the grace you have for today, the grace we can believe will be given tomorrow.

Waiting…

02 Friday Mar 2012

Are you waiting for something big?  Something little?  I know what it is to wait.  Some things were really big ones, other things not so big.  Either way, waiting is hard.

But never have I waited for clean water.  medication or vaccinations.  enough food.  an education.

Children all over the world are waiting for these things.  And more, they are waiting to hear the good news of Christ’s love.

As a Compassion Sponsor, a person has the opportunity to share all the above things with a child in deep poverty.  And as my family has experienced, there is the opportunity to build a relationship, to hear the personal story.

In future posts I plan to share about the journey our family is on, building relationships, writing a new chapter in the story of some children, and in the story of our family.  In the meantime, will you take a moment to watch the video?  And maybe, take a look at the beautiful faces of some of the children who have been waiting the longest for a sponsor?

If you would, please, join me in praying for these precious children?  Maybe you are like us and are limited in how many children your family can sponsor, or maybe, you can sponsor one of them, today?

Either way, there is no limit to how often we can pray for them.  Our FATHER will hear our prayers.  Will you join me, pray for the LORD’s care upon them, for the word to spread and for more of these children to be sponsored?

Petal Rose’s 11th Birthday…and i had the honor of whisking her away for an hour, for a cup of coffee, for some time to share some wisdom with her…and i heard a little whisper “let her talk”  and i did.

Sweet joy, to hear the thoughts and ideas and hopes that rest deep in the heart of our precious Petal Rose.  A very fine thing.

The Art of Deep Seeing

27 Monday Feb 2012

The art of deep seeing makes gratitude possible.  And it is the Art of gratitude that makes joy possible.  Isn’t joy the art of GOD?

One Thousand Gifts

The times when busyness over takes, schedule busting sickness settles in for a few days or weeks, it is then I find comfort in the still voice that tells me to look deeper and see the good that HE is doing.  How wonderous it is, to stop and ponder this, “what am I Lord that You are mindful of me?  That You still speak, and call, and draw me close?”

Counting is like following the long rivers, rushing wide and rapids foaming in places, slowing down to a trickle in others, while even at times it seems the river bed is dry.  But no, look closer, life is flourishing even there.

About once every two weeks or so, I log on to Recycle Bank to earn points by learning about companies that are implemently greener practices and also to learn about ways I can continue to be a better steward of the environment.

In exchange for the points one can print coupons, get magazine subscriptions or gift cards.

Just another way to stretch our dollars and increase a little in knowledge.

This Moment ~ Fever and Cough and Breathing Treatments

24 Friday Feb 2012

{this moment} – Tucked in here most Fridays, photos from an ordinary, or not so ordinary, moment from the week. A moment I want to linger on, press into, and offer thanks for..

This week was a quieter, slower week as 2 of our sweet ladies were hit again with the fever and cough producing virus.  For the first time in two years we broke out the nebulizer and albuteral for a breathing treatment.  Ick.  But I am thankful, so thankful, for all that we need; peaceful home, medical care, motrin, warm tea and plenty of soft cheek strokes.

Quiet activity continued, with plenty of stories and a few dvds mixed in.

Just a Minute ~ Touching the Life of a Child

21 Tuesday Feb 2012

Posted by By Quiet Waters in Uncategorized

Just a Minute, is a new book by Dr. Wess Stafford. In this book he shares stories that back his belief that every time a child crosses paths with us there is the potential for a divine appointment, the opportunity to impact that life in a life giving, or life snuffing way.

As I have read through this book, I have been inspired to give more thought to the life giving words that can be shared more often, on a daily basis. One day, as I was reading, I had to put the book down and immediately write a letter to our sponsor daughter, Lesbia, to spend those next moments encouraging her.  Another time I had to put the book aside to look at my daughter  while she talked to me, to let her know that she is heard.   Because, as Dr Stafford is urging the reader to understand, those moments are extremely important.

And as it does so often happen, reading this book has me on the lookout for others, who take just a minute.   Recently at the dojo, the black belt instructor had to step away from the class.  Our 10 year old Petal Rose (higher ranking belt than the rest of us) was asked by Kyoshi to take the class through a kata.  That in itself could have been a terrible thing, she is a soft spoken, reserved young lady.

It was the way in which he called her out, communicating with his tone and few words how confident he was in her ability to lead this part of the class.  And then, the beauty of the next moment.  It was time to do the kata again, and the instructors were back in place, Kyoshi asked Petal Rose to lead it again, because she had done it very well.
023Petal Rose’s face grew a bit redder, but her shoulders rose a little higher, her back straighter, and her voice was a little stronger.
This momma’s heart sung with joy, to know others can see the strength, ability and beauty in that quiet young lady. It is a blessing to see others sow encouragement into the hearts of my children. As I write these words, another thought enters my mind.
Watching others encourage my children blessed me with hope. As parents we are not in this alone. And when we pray for our sponsor children, and write to them, and tell them that they are beautiful and intelligent and loved, I realize, we are partnering with their families, communicating the same hope.
Hope, a powerful gift that can be given in Just a Minute.
