Weekly Goals April 21-26

Happy Resurrection Monday (yes I am stretching out the celebration for one more day)

My beautiful daughtersHow are your goals coming along? I do hope that they are a guide, but not a taskmaster, allowing you to travel along life intentionally and with purpose, and also with flexibility. Each week, actually every day, I have to remember that my goals keep me on track of an intentional purposeful life, but also allows me flexibility without worry. This past week it doesn’t look as though I accomplished much on my goals, but a full week of life and productivity did take place. A good week of schooling and work was accomplished, shopping for clothing was completed (for now) and some wonderful fellowship took place. Our household of ladies (hubby is out of town working) traveled to the city north to visit with my oldest daughter and her boyfriend. We visited the Botanic Gardens and thoroughly enjoyed each other and the sunshine. Thankfully I still found regular time to read, and finished one of the books on my stack. Now it is Monday, here’s to another try at the goals!

Frozen, Some Thoughts from a Mom of Many Sisters

pondering, Truth

Watching animated movies is not an enjoyable pastime for me. Maybe it’s the years of parenting young children with very little adult interaction, or the ridiculous “happy ever after” ending to most of the movies, but I find it much like fingernails on a chalkboard to sit through an entire animated movie.

That said I do try to get out with my kids once or twice a year to see a “new” movie.   Prior to the arrival of Frozen to the movie theaters I had heard from at least one of my kids about how much she wanted to see the movie. So I made a plan, armed myself with plenty of chocolate for comfort & distraction, and took my youngest three daughters to see the movie.

Oh, my word. I LOVED this movie. My kids were pretty surprised, maybe concerned, when I drove straight home and purchased the Frozen soundtrack on iTunes. And as soon as the movie came out on DVD, I was looking for a good deal to purchase Frozen on blue ray. (Thanks to TopCashBack, I got the great deal of FREE).

While I loved the movie and the soundtrack, I must say that the song Let It Go, out of the context of the movie, is quickly growing old and concerning. All the videos on the internet of girls singing the song have me concerned with the attitude that grows with the lyrics out of context. I think it is a good thing to remember to chat with our kids about the lyrics just a bit. Go ahead and put a little eternal focus into the song.

As I am sure is the same in many other households, references to the movie often pop into conversations. Recently a couple of my daughters were discussing the icy heart. I do not even remember what exactly they were saying because my own wheels started spinning.

When Elsa accidentally freezes Anna’s head, in large part due to Anna’s exuberance, little damage is done. But later in the movie, after years of painful distance between the sisters, Elsa zaps Anna and as a result, Anna’s heart begins to freeze. Fatal damage occurs, and there is no cure except an act of true love.

How often does that happen between sisters, spouses, and friends? Words are flung; important dates are forgotten, again, and a host of other injuries are inflicted on one that is precious and much loved. And what can cure a deep heart wound but love?

And not romantic love, but true sacrificial love. It brought me so much joy that the act of true love was done by the wounded sister, to save the one who wounded her.

That is just what Christ has done for us. We who are filthy, unkind and even downright mean are sinking in our broken hurtful ways, and He sacrificed Himself to save us.  This Easter I hope you will more than reflect on the sacrificial love that was poured out to save each of us from our sinful “frozen” hearts.

Happy Monday! Goals for April 6 – 12

Life around our home is always eventful. Those “quiet waters” of the river of life have so many bends and little pebbly beaches to pull up on and explore! We did start Anne of Green Gables and found that the chapters are too long to be read over one dinner read aloud time. So we are breaking up the chapters over 2 days, and enjoying the story immensely. A couple of us have read the entire series before, but there are others around our table who have not. It is so fun to remember the story as we go, and to be sharing it together! If you haven’t read the Anne of Green Gables books before, give them a try this summer or spring! The Bonhoeffer audio book has taken me nearly 2 months to listen to so far. It has me thinking a lot about World War II from the perspective of the Church rather than the political point of view from high school history.

After I pinned binding to 2 sides of the new cousin quilt I looked at the calendar. Oh my, I had thought I had another week or 2 to get my 13 year old’s skirt finished for Easter. We had been putting it off, waiting for a couple of hours where I could work with her and let her sew it. Well that didn’t happen so I am working on it.

skirt projectAfter reading Notes from a Blue Bike I requested a couple of books from the library. “The $100 Startup” was available early in the week and I have not been able to put it down. There is so much information that is encouraging me in a couple of endeavors.  Slowly I am also making my way through a couple others in this picture.April Reading List

Pray for me? I am working on sharing the story of my open heart surgery nearly 11 years ago, and preparing a speech that I am to give in mid May.

My new camera is a wonderful tool, and while I am enjoying it, I don’t think I have even begun to understand all that I can do with it!

How are your goals coming along. I do hope that they are a guide, but not a taskmaster, allowing you to travel along life with intentional and purpose, and also flexibility.

Happy Monday! How is it going with your goals? It was a good week, and even though I didn’t get all of my goals met, plenty of other good things took place. A friend told me about a Just Between Friends sale, and that was a success for me! Several new books arrived in the mail and I got sidetracked from getting the 2 chapters read in the specific books I had chosen for the week.IMG_1238I am creating a new wall display at church and these photos will be added this week.  These are some of the kids our congregation sponsors through Compassion International.

Education, For Sale, Good Books

For many years we have enjoyed our homeschooling adventure with materials and direction from Five in a Row and Simply Charlotte Mason.

As we enter a new season in our pursuit of education for life, it is time to pass on some things to make room for others.  I am holding onto my Five in a Row manuals for co-op classes and grandchildren, but over the next few months many other things will be offered here.  If you find anything here that will be helpful on your educational journey, please let me know.  Continue reading →

Backyard Barnyard, Week 2

05 Saturday Apr 2014

The chicks, ducks and turkeys are growing, with the ducks most rapidly.  I really like the pouf on top of Sebastian’s head!  We did loose one chick this past week.  No one is sure what happened, and we were concerned about illness.  What relief as the next few days pass with no more loss!

IMG_1206

Care and feeding of these little creatures has been fully taken on by 3 of my daughters.  It is bringing me joy to see the creativity and problem solving skills they each bring to the task.  It took me by surprise when I saw the Lemonade Stand sign being used as a barrier between the ducks/turkeys and the chicks, but a problem was solved for the moment.

IMG_1207

Cleaning up after the ducks prompted this smart little idea.  Now the litter doesn’t have to be changed so often!  My daughters did not believe me last when I tried to sway them away from ducks.  They are SOOO messy!

IMG_1198

The other chicks outgrew the rubber tub this week, and have settled in well on their side of the coop.  Hopefully the night time temperatures will stop dipping so low and we can move the bigger birds out to the unheated coop soon.  It seems the turkeys are ready to stretch out a little more.

Are there any backyard flock raisers reading?  I’d love to hear from you!

Last week I wrote a little about the book Eat Move Sleep and how I have been encouraged to get back to pursuing a more active life.  That is continuing to go well.

This week a friend posted a link on facebook that I have found encouraging along the lines of Sleep.  This article is very interesting to me, as I so enjoy my afternoon 10-15 minute “resets”.  Especially if I get a good 7.5 hours of sleep at night, the mid to late afternoon 15 minute nap is just what I need to finish the day well.  Below is a graphic from the article.

sleep naps Napping can Dramatically Increase Learning, Memory, Awareness, and MoreHave you seen this article or another that encourages you regarding napping and rest?  Do you find a quick nap in the afternoon helps you make it through the day?
