A Day With My Heavenly Father

22 Monday Jun 2015

What could a day with my Heavenly Father look like? Of course, as I try to write this post, the song “I Can Only Imagine” has started running through my mind. But I am going to try and meld together the two different streams of thought that this blogging assignment has stimulated in my mind.

It is said that most people relate to God the Father as a reflection of their relationship with their earthly father. That is certainly true for me. It is only in recent years that I’ve been able to even think about Jehovah God as a kind, gentle and loving Father. And now, I even wake each morning with “good morning Father” on my mind! A habit of saying it out loud was intentionally cultivated and I’ve discovered great joy in starting the day like that! Such a gift.

The other stream of thought that started rolling around in my mind with this assignment was what I think a day with the Heavenly Father looks like. Goodness, I’m not sure what this says about me, but when I imagine Heaven and those first moments with God the Father… I hope to crawl up on His lap like a little child and just hear what He has to say in those first moments. I know that my kids have great memories of that kind of thing and so much more. They each have wonderful times of bike riding, hiking, reading, and gardening, cooking and laughing with my husband, their daddy. So I do believe that as I continue thinking about this, more ideas will come to mind.

Father's Day

Father's Day

Serving Together

To say that I am very thankful for the husband God has given me, and the way he fathers our many daughters seems like not words enough.  So many children, near and far, are growing up without the gentle loving guidance of a kind and wise father. Maybe one has been fully abandoned. Or another lives in the uncertainty and fear of harshness, neglect and abuse. If you are reading this, and that has been your experience, I want to encourage you, as one who has experienced a harsh and broken relationship with my earthly father. I have been brought under the wings of the Most High, the Heavenly Father. He is a kind and wise and gentle Father.  I pray to the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation, of insight into mysteries and secrets, in the deep and intimate knowledge of Him.  May it be so.

If you are interested in speaking life and love into a child who may be growing up with out the love and nurture of a father, whether because of the absence or neglect, due to the realities of extreme poverty please consider sponsoring a child through Compassion International.

Now I leave you with the music of MercyMe.

I Can Only Imagine
by MercyMe
What it will be like
When I walk
By your side

I can only imagine
What my eyes will see
When your face
Is before me
I can only imagine

Chorus:
Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine

Make Over Your Mornings

20 Saturday Jun 2015

The pace of daily life has changed with summer being upon us and I was pleased when I was invited to preview Money Saving Mom’s newest resource, Make Over Your Mornings.  While working through that e-course, I found a new time and place to respond to the letters our sponsored children write to us.  Now I have a manilla folder that holds each piece of correspondence until I reply to it.

Sponsorship Saturday

The folder stays in one of the tote bags I keep by my rocking chair.

Sponsorship Saturday, Quiet Time

Each morning, when I settle in for my quiet time, the folder is right there.  Some mornings there isn’t time to write a letter, but many more mornings there is time.  And I’m loving having this activity attached to my quiet time, as I am finding that telling the children and teens about what I am learning from the Word comes much more naturally.

quiet time spot

Letter writing and morning quiet times, those things go together in this season.  How about for you?  Let’s talk more about letter writing, child sponsorship and even quiet times in the comments!

May the grace and the peace of Christ be with you.

Share Your World, Sponsorship Saturday

02 Saturday May 2015

Share Your World is a fantastic idea from the Compassion Letter Writing pinterest board, for writing to our sponsored children.  With that in mind I wrote online letters to all our kiddos about one of my favorite nearby places, Rock Ledge Ranch.  It was a little challenging to choose what to include in the letter, as it is a historical site and I didn’t want to make the translation difficult!

Rock Ledge Ranch

April, 2015

Dear Friend,

Hello my friend! I hope this letter finds you and your family healthy and doing well. I am praying for you, your mother and your baby brother.

Our family lives in Colorado, United States. We have many interesting things about the city where we live, but I want to tell you about a special one today. We like to visit a place called Rock Ledge Ranch. It is a historical site, with houses from 3 different time periods of Colorado history. My children often volunteer there during their summer break from school.

The Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site is a living history farm and museum that depicts life in the Pikes Peak region in four time periods: American Indian area in 1775; 1860’s Galloway Homestead; 1880’s Chambers Home and Ranch; 1907 Edwardian Country Estate.

At the American Indian area there is a teepee and a wikiup. Native American people work in that area and teach about their history.

The Rock Ledge House was built-in 1874 by the Chamber’s family. This family started the first school in our area, and the school was in their house at first.

My favorite area of the ranch is the Galloway Homestead, where a person can learn about homesteading in the 1860’s. There is often a fire in the adobe oven and sometimes the staff and volunteers cook food.

last summer my youngest daughter repaired this chair with all new weaving, while volunteering at the ranch

People who work at the ranch wear costumes that are like the clothing that people wore during the historical time periods. They get to work with old tools and do daily work like it was done in the past. It is a wonderful way to learn!

Laundry

Laundry, the old fashioned way

Learning about history is very interesting to me and I appreciate having Rock Ledge Ranch nearby. There is a large garden, a pond thriving with animals and a barn with chickens, sheep, a cow and several horses. I am attaching some pictures of the ranch. I hope you enjoy learning about one of my favorite places.

Please write again soon. I look forward to hearing about your favorite place and about how you are doing.

With love,

Michelle

It is my plan to continue to write about places in our area and I hope that our sponsored children will be inspired to share more about where they live!  Wanna join the letter writing community of Compassion Sponsors?  Check out this blog post for more information.  And click this link if you are interested in learning more about Child Sponsorship through Compassion International.

#givingtuesday, Give Poverty the Boot

Giving Tuesday?  What is it?

From the Giving Tuesday site

“We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity.”

So knowing just what Giving Tuesday is, what does one do with it?  There are so very many good options for giving back, giving a hand, lifting others up!

For my family, it is about families and children.  Coming from broken families, my husband and I are committed to do what we can to help families make it.  And children, yes children.  That is part of why we are so involved with Compassion International.  Through sponsorship, we not only are able to invest in the life of a child, but by lifting a portion of the financial burden, we are walking alongside the whole family!

This month I am advocating for 2 precious children, Abayisenga Joice and Baginama Faustin.  These two children are available for immediate sponsorship, through Compassion International.

#givingtuesday

Abayisenga Joice, Rwanda, May 30, 2011

How about turning #GivingTuesday into a year long commitment to financially sponsoring, encouraging and praying for a child living in poverty?

How about telling poverty that…

#givingtuesday and Child Sponsorship means poverty does NOT have the last word for Abayisenga nor Baginama

If you are interested this #givingtuesday, in telling poverty “you do not have the last word” by sponsoring one of these children, please email me at byquietwaters at gmail.  I would be thrilled to give you more information and help you give poverty the boot!

November Correspondence, Sponsorship Sunday

Sponsorship Saturday

Hello,

From time to time you will now see Sponsorship Saturday starting with November Correspondence   I will be sharing ways my family seeks to connect with the children we sponsor through Compassion International.  It is my hope that these posts will encourage you as you correspond with sponsored children or interact with children in your community.  Maybe you will even be encouraged to begin sponsoring a child!

This week I was busy with several projects, one being the November correspondence for our sponsored children.

Sponsorship Saturday

Correspondence Package

While working on the letters about Thanksgiving I also found some lovely things to print for birthdays.  These paper dolls really caught my eye. I was excited to find India Friends clothing to send in the birthday folders for Samatha and Priti at this site.  There are a lot of “friends” available so I think I’ll be able to print the cultural clothing for each of our younger sponsored kids.

birthday folder

After printing the paper dolls I wondered how best to send them.  I was concerned about sending them uncut, not knowing if tools like scissors are readily available to the children.  So I laminated the pages whole (I did trim them to get two pages in one laminating pouch), then cut the pieces out.  I am sending a page of outline outfits for the children to color themselves if they want, and to cut or tear out if they desire.

There are pages of  various coloring pages at this site.  It will be fun to print different ones from time to time to send to the kids.  Another good idea might be to color a page myself and send it.  We’ll see if that happens, it is a good idea, but I’m not sure it is one I will act.

How about you?  What are you sending to your sponsored children?

What I’m Into June 2014

What I’m Into (June 2014 Edition)

Read and Reading: Interrupted by Jen Hatmaker, The Warden and the Wolf King by Andrew Peterson, The Good News About Marriage, and Walking Prey

TV: Just this month I turned on PBS for my granddaughter. We sort of watched Clifford the Big Red Dog. I wondered if she would choose the Clifford book at the library this week, but no, she wanted the book with the baby on the cover. I’m actually relieved about that, that she prefers a photograph of a face over a big red dog.

Music: DCTalk, Toby Mac, Newsboys and Hillsong United Zion. Chica and I bought a few cds on our mother daughter getaway in June, when we could not find an audiobook. Neither Barnes & Noble nor Family Christian bookstore had any variety of classics in audiobook format. Back to amazon or iTunes shopping.

New discoveries: Glenwood Springs Hot Springs and the Glenwood Canyon bike trail. Zip Lines are FUN!

What I Love:

Mae & Marme, America the Beautiful Bike Ride

I didn’t love this: mosquito bites. Living in Colorado Springs has many many benefits, one being very few bugs. On our trip to the western side of the state I was bitten dozens of times. Before we travel to Bible Camp and on our planned camping trip, each on the western side of our mountains, I am going to order Bug Block!

In the Blogosphere:  Organizing for a busy toddler

The Responsibility of Opportunity

On The Blog:  I am working on 2 parts of my story and hope to get one of them posted in July.  I’m also sharing more about our Compassion kids and my family’s partnership with Compassion International.

Correspondence in June

28 Saturday Jun 2014

Last month I came across so many ideas for our June correspondence to the children we sponsor through Compassion International.

First these Bible stories! I discovered that they can be printed in many different languages so I decided to print in Spanish for our kids in Central and South America. Since this is the first of this type of material that I have sent, I started with creation .

For Karen I found the printable alphabet pages,

Karen correspondent sponsorship

Karen Margarita, CO790, correspondent sponsorship

For Edward and Angelica I am sending introductory letters with stickers & photos.

All of the kids are getting bandaids, a gift we send at the beginning of summer each year.  We buy several boxes of colorful and standard bandaids.  Then we staple 5-6 on index cards, labeled with the important information.  Someday I hope to find some kind of coloring page or printable to tie a Scripture to the bandaids.

During the month we recieved 3 “new sponsorship” packets for Karen, Edward & Angelica.

We also received a cheerful letter from Karen, it was actually addressed to her financial sponsor, which appears to be a corporation.  I am tickled we get to partner with them and be Karen’s correspondent sponsors.  Karen asked some fun questions and I look forward to getting a reply out to her soon!

Always on the lookout for new ideas to add to our sponsorship correspondence, so please comment and share!

About a year ago our family began making our homemade vanilla extract with organic vanilla beans from Olive Nation.  It has been a lot of fun, and so nice to be able to add another quality ingredient into our weekly baking.  After sharing this vanilla as an end of the semester gift for our children’s teachers, we have had wonderful feedback.  So we decided to make another batch, and offer it for sale.
