Third Thursday Community Potluck Cookbook

Third Thursday Community Potluck Cookbook

The Third Thursday Community Potluck Cookbook Recipes and Stories to Celebrate the Bounty of the Moment

By Nancy Vienneau
Published by Thomas Nelson

Book Description

“This is not your grandma’s potluck.

The cliché is unavoidable. At the third Thursday potluck, you won’t find canned soup casseroles or whipped delite, as much as you may love them. What you will find instead is an array of dishes in sync with the season.

Each month offers up an appropriate menu. July is for tomatoes; August for figs; December for gifts from the kitchen; February for staying warm. Gouda Risotto with Fresh Peas, Cider-Braised Pork with Pears, Crab Mac-and-Cheese, or Brown Butter Honey Cake, they each appear in their seasons at this lively community potluck.

Hosted by a group of goodwill-wielding friends and strangers, the potluck’s beneficiaries have one thing in common: a love of good food. The premise is simple; on the third Thursday of every month bring a seasonal fresh dish for sharing. The result is gloriously rich: new friends, fun, and good eats.

Whether you’re looking for instructions on assembling your own potluck (the first clue: no rules), or recipes for imaginative, honest dishes, whether it’s for a group of six or thirty, the inspiration in this book will suit anyone who wants to celebrate good food and good neighbors.”

On only one other occasion that I can remember have I ever “read” a cookbook.  I cannot say that I have read “The Third Thursday Community Potluck Cookbook” through, but I have enjoyed the slow walk through the pages.  My list of recipes to try is growing and I look with anticipation for the seasonally available ingredients that I can gather from the local farmers markets.

My husband and I talked about the concept of a Third Thursday Potluck and I think we may have found so “food for thought” for building more community for our family.

Third Thursday Potluck was sent to me in exchange for my opinions by BookLook Bloggers.

We have a very friendly looking neighborhood character.  This past week I noticed that he has now grown hair, eyebrows and a beard, last year he was just a round green face.

Walking around our neighborhood is always a lot of fun.  We pass by friendly neighbors, watch people pass running or biking, and we always enjoy seeing what other people are doing in their yards.

About a year ago our family began making our homemade vanilla extract with organic vanilla beans from Olive Nation.  It has been a lot of fun, and so nice to be able to add another quality ingredient into our weekly baking.  After sharing this vanilla as an end of the semester gift for our children’s teachers, we have had wonderful feedback.  So we decided to make another batch, and offer it for sale.

Our youngest has a friend or two with certain little critters and there have been hints and requests from time to time to add to our menagerie.  This weekend we decided that Daddy and Marme are ready to take on a new venture

Fiver (Black Rex) and Hazel

and Fiver & Hazel joined the backyard barnyard.

Builder renovated one of the chicken coops into a rabbit lodge.  I’ll have pictures of that in a week or two.

We also did some work in the garden and got the strawberry bed ready for planting.  Mae & Builder planted 10 Everbearing Strawberry Plants.

I would love to hear about other backyard barnyards  🙂

Once again a food sensitivity/allergy is taken me on a new journey to ensure my family gets good nutrition that is tasty and safe.  This recipe originally appeared on Heavenly Homemakers.

I have tweaked the recipe to suit my family.  I love that it is full of protein and veggie goodness. and that each member of the family enjoys it!  I don’t mind the clean up as much when I’ve doubled the recipe and have some to put in the freezer for another day!

If you try this recipe, please do let me know what you think, and what adjustments you make!

We celebrated Chica’s 8th Birthday with a Medieval Feast.

The preparations for this party started in Canada, before we moved back home.  We bought 2 flat sheets from Walmart, made a simple paper pattern and sewed up tunics as part of the theme.

The day before the party, Petal Rose helped decorate the castle cake.

The whole week before the party, Mae wove floral wreaths for each of us and the guests.

Aren’t they beautiful?!  Mae and Petal Rose really took part in preparing for this party and for making it a wonderful success!

The little blue monster sitting there on the table served as the dragon for the party.  He sat on a trap over a fair puppet maiden and the lovely princess knights fought him blindfolded to rescue their friend.

When the guests arrived, it was early afternoon and everyone was hungry, so we started with our Medieval Feast.  There were Roasted Chicken Legs, Cold Fruit, Veggies, Bread & Butter, and a Pink Lemonade.

Each of the girls drew a sword from the stone when they arrived, and recieved their “title”.  We had Lady Ice of Cream, Lady Sun of Shine, Lady Lolli of Pop, Lady Razzle of Dazzle, Lady Slice of Orange and Lady Roe of Petal. The Ladies made  Coat of Arms to pin to thier tunics.

Mae entertained by twisting balloon swords and shields.  And we had beautiful time period music playing, that we had found on iTunes.

Chica had a wonderful time, esp being back home and being able to celebrate with some good friends.  I am so blessed by this little surprise child and enjoying who she is growing into more everyday.  Chica is a fireball of delight!

Mae and Petal Rose really took a large part of the planning and preparing upon themselves.  It is exciting to see how able and willing they are to help, and how creatively they can do it!
