Reading 2014

The weather has leaped into spring and I’ve enjoyed more time outside.  It is good that I set an earlier bedtime a while back, so that I can get in a chapter or two before sleepiness takes over!  It was more challenging to make it through my reading list this month, but that is okay.  Sunshine is an equally good thing!

IMG_0768

EAT MOVE SLEEP by Tom Rath ~ thoughts from this book are here.

Love Does by Bob Goff – we read this book as our dinner time read aloud over the past 2 months.  My kids got a kick over my tears in many chapters, but I loved that this book opened up conversations on deeper topics.  My kids seemed to love Mr Goff’s humor and mishaps.

Simplify and Beautify Your Life with Natural Coconut Oil, by Carrie Soneji, read on my kindle app ~ Have you ever seen the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”?  Well, coconut oil is my windex!

5 Conversations you must have with your daughter by Vicki Courtney ~ This book is full of important information, but I found myself very bogged down by all the statistics and heaviness.  After making it slowly though chapter 12, I simply skimmed over the rest of the book.

Where There Was No Church, by EJ Martin.  This was a very interesting book, if you are interested in missions, I recommend it!

How about you, what did you read in March?

Backyard Barnyard

backyard flock

Last fall when we sent our 2nd flock of chickens to the country, I was pretty sure we were done with backyard chickens and ducks.  Well here we are again, with a little flock of chickens, ducks and TURKEYS.  Part of the reason I was willing to do this again is that I have 2 daughters who very heartily told me they are more than willing, they WANT to learn to butcher and process birds for the freezer.

So, the turkeys are named La Cena & El Almuerzo.

Image

A couple of daughters have named the ducks in hopes that they will be pets, I don’t think they remember our last fiasco with ducks, sigh.

For the little flock of chickens, we have a good plan in place.  Books will be read, the internet googled and hopefully around August 1 we will know which birds are laying good eggs.  And we will know birds are headed for the soup pot.

This hard full and good life sure is a crazy one!  Are there any other backyard flock families among the readers of By Quiet Waters?  And do you butcher/process some of the birds at the end of summer?

Certain laundry doers each wanted to be the first to try out the new scent and were very tickled by the bright green crystals.

As I said at the beginning of the post, we all enjoy using Purex Crystals.  I am partial to lavender scented products so this Limited Edition Fabulously Fresh scent doesn’t register high on as enjoyable scent for my laundry.  But, I did have a lovely trip down memory lane, as the scent reminded me of my grandmother.  It was sweet to just think about the years spent with her, even following her around as she did laundry and hung it out on the line.

Sweet memories.

Now, I would like to give 3 By Quiet Waters readers an opportunity to try out Purex Crystals in-wash fragrance booster…

Reading, EAT MOVE SLEEP

Reading 2014

Recently I heard about the book EAT MOVE SLEEP by Tom Rath and placed a request for it to be held at our nearby library.  Even though I have just been through 2 particularly busy weeks, the simple format and short chapters made it an easy book to read.  Each night before bed I have been able to read a chapter or two.

The book got me thinking more about the sedentary lifestyle I have fallen back into.  I have fresh motivation to make the trips to the YMCA, but also to think more about how I can move during the day.  That lead me to thinking about all the driving and waiting I do for the kids over the course of the week.  Between EAT MOVE SLEEP and The Power of a Half Hour there was plenty of encouragement to look for those “half hours” and MOVE.  I’ve added in 2 more walks as a result and am looking forward further examining the weekly schedule to find more time to get moving.

While there are also a few new ideas for me to consider in EAT MOVE SLEEP, there were a couple of things that just didn’t ring true to me.  There was also an evolutionary tone to the book that surprised me.  In any case, EAT MOVE SLEEP was an encouragement to press on with the healthier choices I have made and I am thankful for that encouragement.

Giving, A Book Review

book review

I Like Giving by Brad Formsma is an inspiring book full of stories of how living generously changed lives of the givers in an undeniable and wonderful way.
Image
As an inspirational book, there was story after story that reinforced the author’s idea that a generous life has the power to transform.  Sometimes I get bogged down by “story after story” and I appreciated in a slight change, in chapter 4.  This particular change resonated with me, not just on the topic of the generosity, but also in other areas of life.
“…my expectation of a “right” response made the whole thing less of a gift and more of a transaction.  When I allowed myself to find joy in giving regardless of the receiver’s response, I found I could enjoy giving every time.”
“Giving repeatedly shifted my perspective away from me and toward other people. … The more I focus on helping others, the less I focus on me, and that makes my heart come alive.”
The words quoted here jumped out at me, because as in many things we do, it is important to take the focus off ourselves and put it on others!  And no matter how “giving” we are seeking to be, I imagine each one of us know just how easy it is to focus on self.
If you are looking for an inspirational read on generosity, I Like Giving is just that.  There are several resources available about this book.  You can read the first chapter here.  Below you will find there is a book trailer.

“I received this book for free from Blogging for Books for this review.”

One Lost Sheep

A sweet colorful retelling of the Parable of the Ninety Nine found in Luke 15 in the mail recently.

Image4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ 7 I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. Luke 154-7

This picture book, One Lost Sheep, is written by Rhonda Gowler Greene and illustrated by Margaret Spengler.  The story is told in simple rhyme with wonderful descriptive language.  The illustrations are rich and colorful, probably much more colorful than the setting of the actual story when Jesus told it!  But colorful and engaging to the eyes of young children as they are gently introduced to the parable.

My own children are growing rapidly and don’t pull out the picture books as often anymore, but I am pleased to add One Lost Sheep to our picture book library.  It will be a joy to share the book with a grandchild, or at times when one of us work with the youngest children in our congregation.

This book is written by Rhonda Gowler Greene and will be available for purchase on March 25.  It is available for preorder from AMAZON.  ZONDERkidz has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book through BookLook Bloggers.

The Yoke of Bitterness

Truth

“That you shall break his yoke from your neck.”  Genesis 27:40

Bitterness is a prevalent issue in humankind.

When I harbor unforgiveness toward someone, there is the risk it will grow into bitterness.  Bitterness becomes a weight on the heart, a yoke on the shoulders.

Forgiveness on the other hand, breaks the yoke and sets the bitter free!
