Where to Eat in the Florida Keys?
During our Florida Keys Vacation we found a vacation house rental, and for the first time, eating on vacation was an absolute pleasure. No stress about hotel breakfasts or blowing the budget on eating out. Instead, we prepared most of our meals at the house. We had a good breakfast every morning, loaded a cooler for each day’s lunch and often ate dinner in. I LOVED being able to choose when to go out for a meal and enjoyed each of those meals so much more than if we were juggling food from hotel rooms. This is the house we rented. It was fantastic!
The kids most definitely wanted a day at a good sandy beach. The Keys are not known for having good beaches, and we can confirm that. So Builder did some research and we headed to Fort Lauderdale by the Sea. During our time in Fort Lauderdale by the Sea, we decided to have lunch at the Aruba Beach Cafe. After playing in the water and on the beach most of us were ready for a good meaty burger. And that is what we had. Mine was the “Aruba” Teriyaki Burger, Angus Burger, grilled pineapple, Monterey Jack. Oh. My. Lands. Delicious! Just might see if I can recreate a burger like that here at home. The service was pretty good and the atmosphere was nice, and relaxed. Live music began as we were leaving.
One evening Builder and I slipped out for a date. We had dinner at the Fish House, Key Largo. The service was good, the atmosphere was fun. As for the food, Builder order a house specialty, Matecumbe and it was delicious. I didn’t choose well. Not wanting to get the same thing, I decided on something else. Definitely should have gone with my first thought. Overall this is a good place on Key Largo to enjoy some fresh seafood.
While at Key West we ate at the Six Toed Cat. The food at this place is fantastic. I think we all were a little nervous when we entered the cafe and found it empty, but we were hungry and needed to cool off and a bite to eat. The menu at this cafe is wonderful. Two of us ordered salads, and were served the biggest individual salads I’ve ever seen. Each definitely could have been shared between us. One of my daughters order the Smokey Turkey Panini, and lucky me, she shared it! The food was generously served and delicious. The service was good, but NOT friendly.
Now for all things Key Lime. The City Hall Cafe claims with a big sign, to have the BEST Key Lime Pie. We saw that sign on an evening drive and decided to give it a try. Oh, they do. have. the. best. key lime pie. We didn’t go around trying pie at different places, we might not have fit in our return airplane seats if we had, but sometimes you just know. It was good.
On a pinterest search before our trip I read about Key Lime Pie, dipped in chocolate, on a stick. It was on my list of things to experience during our vacation. It wasn’t until we were preparing to complete our day at Key West that we saw the sign for this exotic treat.
Kermit’s Key Lime Pie had a sign in the window so we circled the block and Builder dropped me off to purchase 5 of these treats. I bought them, along with a couple of Key Lime lip balms. while he circled the block again. Parking is not easy on Key West.
This was interesting. Since it was dipped in chocolate and on a stick I think I expected it to be frozen, like an ice cream treat. It wasn’t, it was room temperature. And the chocolate got messy quickly in the Florida heat. There were mixed reviews from everyone in the family, including one person who put about half of his into the trash bag. But tried it we did, and another thing I wanted to do and try was accomplished.
