The city of Colorado Springs is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States, personally speaking. We have all the wonder of natural beauty: 4 distinct seasons, mountains, plains, sunshine, rain, snow, ice, lakes, rivers, creeks, etc. And we have a wonderful eclectic community, including many fantastic artists.
If you take a drive to Cheyenne Canyon and Helen Hunt Falls on Colorado Springs west side, take a short detour while in the area. As you leave the Canyon, just past the Starsmore Discovery Center, turn right onto Pine Grove Avenue and go around the slight curve. There you will be met by an amazing sight.
This is the home of the Kempf family, and the site of many of Starr Kempf’s Kinetic Movement Sculptures.
There is a little pull off on the shoulder of the road where you can park, get out and take a closer look at the artwork. I have found that just before sunset is great time to photograph the sculptures.
Starr Kempf was an American sculptor and architect. He was maybe best known for his Kinetic Movement Sculptures, many of which are on display here at his home. Kempf died in 1995, and I believe, a member of his family now lives at the house. That said, remember that this is private property, and stay outside the fence as you take in the amazing beauty of these sculptures.
This is a short 10-20 minute stop to add onto a trip up Cheyenne Canyon or the Starsmore Discovery Center, and I think you’ll be glad that you did!
If you know of other sites where one can see the Kempf Sculptures, please tell us in the comments!
