Whew, school’s out for summer! Reading in May pretty much stalled out, and looking over the calendar I don’t see any good reason for the stall. But a lot of good took place, and plans for a super family vacation were settled. This month it seems that I just moved stacks of books around, back and forth between my home and the library. The two books I did finish are Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and Persuasion.
*Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford – This was a good, gentle World War 2 story, dealing with the internment of Japanese Americans during the war. My reading the book stimulated a couple of conversations about the Japanese internment and current events. Exploring this topic more over the summer is on my mind.
*Persuasion by Jane Austin – 2016 is the year reading a couple of Jane Austin books is on my list. First, this book fills in an entry on the Modern Mrs Darcy Reading Challenge that I am participating in. The category, a book published before I was born. Over recent years my teens and I have watched some of the movies and have found the stories quite enjoyable. In the past, conversations that turned toward Austin always puzzled me a bit, but now I understand! This book, Persuasion, was my Audible book for the month. Reading the pen and ink book this summer is on my list, as I don’t think I got as much from this audiobook as I have with others. Maybe it is the details and styles of Austin’s writing, and the fact that I am more visual. Whatever the case, the next Austin book I “read” will be with a book in my hands.
As we pack for vacation only one book is going in my bag, which makes me pretty nervous. Bouncing from book to book throughout a week is pretty normal for me. We will have our kindle, and of course audiobooks loaded on our ipods and phones, so there will be options if the book I pack moves quickly or I need to bounce. But WHAT BOOK? Do you have any suggestions for a good historical novel or great beach read?
Carrying into June I am still reading Fitting Room by Kelly Minter, Life in the Spirit by Jeff Anderson, and The Gentle Art of Discipling Women.
On another note, I spent some time looking over the MMD Reading Challenge I chose to participate in this year and the books I’ve finished. Much to my surprise the challenge is nearly complete for me! Of the 12 books, 7 are completed and 2 books are in process. And it is SUMMER. It is pretty exciting to think that I might complete this challenge long before the end of the year. See below:
*a book published this year ~ Breaking Busy by Alli Worthinton
*a book you can finish in a day ~ Maggie’s Miracle by Karen Kingsbury
*a book you’ve been meaning to read ~ Speak Love by Annie Downs
* a book recommended by your local librarian or bookseller ~ in process
*a book you should have read in school ~ A Comedy of Errors by Shakespeare
*a book chosen for you by your spouse, child, or BFF ~
*a book published before you were born ~ Persuasion by Jane Austen
*a book that was banned at some point ~ Call of the Wild by Jack London
*a book you previously abandoned ~ Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good by Jan Karon

What are you reading? Any good reads in May?

I recommend one of Becky Wade’s Porter Family books for a beach read. They are excellent and I didn’t want to put any of them down.
Thank you Elizabeth, I will check to see if our library has them!
