Family Mission Trip… Without Leaving Home!

March 15, 2016 By Michelle

Take a Family Mission Trip…  Without Leaving Home… through Compassion International’s Child Sponsorship Program!  For several years my dear Beloved Builder earnestly prayed to God, to make us missionaries right where we are.  Since then a fire has been lit in each of us to minister to children and families locally and through the Compassion Sponsorship opportunity.

#thatisbrave, Compassion Internatioinal

It was common, when our children were younger, for us to check out books from the library, search Google Earth, and prepare foods to learn about and connect with our sponsored children’s countries.  We would write letters, draw pictures and pray, and we still do.  And as this family ministry has grown, just as our children have grown and matured, it has changed.  Our kids now have ownership of their own ministries as missionaries at home.

The Beauty and Value of Different

September 29, 2015 By Michelle

The Prince Who Was Just Himself

The Prince Who Was Just Himself by Silke Schnee is a lovely children’s book that I am so pleased to have in our family’s library.   Once upon a time there lived a king and a queen… so the story goes.  When baby number 3 is born the family notices that he is different.  This story is a gentle conversation about the beauty and value of different, of a child born with down syndrome.  Over the years I’ve met several families who have experienced the sad surprise of a having a new baby, with down syndrome.  And I’ve had the blessing to watch these families, as love and delight in their precious bundles grow in body and in their hearts.  It is good to find authors and illustrators creating beautiful and joyful books to affirm the fact that each child is a wonder and worth life, our time and our love.

The Prince Who Was Just Himself

Silke Schnee is a journalist and works as a TV program maker at a public broadcaster in Cologne . She is married and has three sons . Her youngest son Noah was born in July 2008 with Trisomy 21 ( Down syndrome )  She lives in Germany with her husband, the king, and their three sons.  The youngest, Noah, is the inspiration for this book.

Reading in January

January 30, 2014 By Michelle

My first audiobook listen of the year, Man of the Family begins shortly after Charlie Moody, Ralph’s father, has died.  There are many struggles and surprises for the family as they learn to survive and thrive without husband and father.  Ralph, being the oldest son, assumes the role of “man of the family”.  With his sister, Grace, Ralph finds many creative ways to help support the family.  One could be very inspired by the determination and creativity of this family!

It is enjoyable as a long time Colorado resident to listen to the story and recognize the many of the locations mentioned in the story, to be able to close my eyes and see it.

Ralph Moody’s book, The Man of the Family is the second in his Little Britches Series, and like the first, is a wonderful story.   Last year I read Little Britches and encouraged my husband to read it too.  With his work schedule, he prefers to listen to audiobooks.  We purchased both books 1 & 2 from iTunes, narrated by Cameron Beierle and what a treat they have been!

Early in the month I asked Petal Rose for a book recommendation.  It was fun to see her dash away and then, come back with a stack or 5 or 6 books.  Twice Freed by Patricia St John was the book I chose from her stack as Petal Rose has been seen reading this book several times in the last few years.  A fantastic book, I now recommend it highly.  Even though this is a children’s or young teen read, the author does a wonderful job describing the setting and bringing the early church to life in the imagination.

Torches of Joy is a book we started as a read aloud, but in a busy season it was set aside.  I recently requested it from the library and finished reading it on my own.  Here are some of my thoughts from the book.

And lastly, prompted by this article we requested several books from the library.  So far the only one I have received and made time for reading is The Giver by Lois Lowry.  This is a heartbreaking, haunting story that my daughters and I are talking about.  I doubt we will go see the movie, as the word pictures were strong enough.

What have you been reading this month?  While I really want to focus on the books waiting on the bookshelves around our home, I do love to hear what others are reading.  And I usually, get delightfully distracted reading a few of those titles.

Reading in May

May 31, 2013 By Michelle

Listed below are the titles of books and stories that made richer the spring days of May.  A wonderful realization has come to me that an idea that was presented to me a couple of years ago is true.  Good books are mentors.  This has been a tremendous discovery!

The Books;

Jessica’s First Prayer by Hesba Stretton  ~ My 12 year old daughter told me that this is one of her favorite books, that she has read it more times than she can remember.  Then she invited me to read it, so I did.  Truly a wonderful story.

The Cat that God Sent by Jim Kraus

Cleaning House, A Mom’s 12-Month Experiment to Rid Her Home of Youth Entitlement by Kay Wills Wyma, my response here

The BARE NAKED TRUTH, Dating, Waiting, and God’s Purity Plan by Bekah Hamrick Martin, review coming in June

Audio ~ Books, Sermons, Letters, etc

Letter from Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King, Jr.

For the Children’s Sake ~ I am part way through this one.  This is a book that may end up in my basket of gifts to give to new mothers.

What are you reading?  Who are your literary mentors?
