Bible Stories for a Girls Heart, New Book Review

May 9, 2017 By Michelle

Bible Stories for a Girl's Heart

Often I receive books to review, and many of them are children’s books.  This week I have received Love Letters from God, Bible Stories for a Girl’s Heart.

This is such a pretty book, with very inviting, colorful illustrations.  Inside, each story includes a pop up “letter from God” that draws from the Biblical story.

New Board Book ~ God Loves Mommy & Me

April 10, 2017 By Michelle

God Loves Mommy & Me

New from TommyNELSON Publishers is this cheerful board book, God Loves Mommy & Me by Bonnie Rickner Jensen.  The book is illustrated by Laura Watkins.   This children’s board book is illustrated with two long ear bunnies, and  cheerful colors.  Young children will find the story delightful, and will likely recognize activities they do illustrated on the pages.  This is a good book for stimulating conversation between the child and the loved one who is reading to her.

” God put love in Mommy’s heart, and I can feel it too…”

“God’s great love is endless – it reaches to the sky, like when I’m on the swing and Mommy helps me fly so high!”

Aren’t those words sweet and true?!  As mothers, we do want the love of God to be evident in us, to flow through us to our children, husbands, and the world around us.   This is another book affirming the love and purpose God has for the different roles in family life.  And in this case, the role of Mommy in the raising and nurture of children.  I think it is important and good that these books are being written, and that the family is being esteemed by authors and publishers at this time.

If you are interested in adding God Loves Mommy & Me to your family’s library, you can do so here.  There is also a giveaway happening for the book, HERE.

What Does God Really Promise? A New Book from Tyndale

November 9, 2016 By Michelle

“What Does God Really Promise” by Carolyn Larsen and illustrated by Amylee Weeks is a simple introduction and explanation on some of the foundational promises of God found in Scripture.  In the book you will find 101 questions and answers regarding God’s promises, the purpose of the church and regarding the future.

whatdoesgodpromise

This book is laid out simply, and could be used for a daily devotion for families, for young people or for new believers.  Thinking ahead to working in children’s ministry I think a book like this could be used as a springboard for additional conversations, and answers to deeper questions that kids so often bring up.

This is a new book from the Tyndale House Publishers.  Check here for more information or to purchase a copy of the book for yourself, a young person, or your church library.

Thanks to Tyndale House Publishers for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book.

Favorite Board Books

April 22, 2015 By Michelle

Books are among my favorite things, so it makes sense that with a grand child, I have some favorite board books, right?!  It is a habit of mine at the library, to check out the board book shelf and the picture book shelves to bring home a stack of “new” stories and old favorites.  That is how I discovered Global Baby Girls.  Readers of By Quiet Waters probably know, I am an all girl mom, and am starting out as an all girl Nana!

My granddaughter is definitely taken in by the beautiful photographs of baby girl faces, children from all over the world.  The photographs are beautiful, for sure.  What I also like is the message of this little book.  Baby girls are beautiful, strong, capable, smart and can change the world!  I love reading this book  to Joyness, and I get tickled when her aunties are also in the room to hear the true words.  Usually one or two or three “big girls” will gather around and the spirit of affirmation grows!

After I returned this book to the library, I promptly placed an order for our own copy.  We keep stacks of books for sweet baby girl in a couple different rooms and I often find Global Baby Girls on the top of the stack!  If you have baby girls in your life, I encourage you to take a look at this book!  Global Baby Girls is also available in Spanish at Amazon!

Jesus Calling The Story of Christmas, How Do You Say Goodnight

November 12, 2019 By Michelle

Jesus Calling The Story of Christmas

Jesus Calling, The Story of Christmas; Ten in the Bed; The Friend Ship

Books.  Books. Books.  This former home school mom, grandmother and “reader” loves books.  In particular, I love children’s books.  A few posts have already been written here on the blog about children’s books, and today I have a new one for you.  New books often arrive in my mailbox, or or I find new gems at the bookstore.  These favorites, old and new, find their way off the shelf and into the hands of a new generation, my grandkids.  Read on to discover new books you will want to introduce to the children in your life!

Jesus Calling The Story of ChristmasSarah Young, the author of Jesus Calling, has written this book for children.  The story of Christmas begins at creation.  The author highlights that fact that Jesus has always been present, and God always had a plan for Christmas, which is Easter.

Bible verses and devotions are on every spread of this book.  The illustrations are by Katya Longhi and are just beautiful.

“Jesus Calling:  The Story of Christmas is a beautifully embellished jacketed hardcover with foil and glitter. Curl up the precious young ones in your life, and share with them Jesus Calling: The Story of Christmas.”

Ten In the Bed by Penny Dale

Ten in the Bed by Penny Dale

Ten in the Bed by Penny Dale is an old favorite.  This book originally entered our home about 19 years ago, when I purchased it through Discovery Toys.  It has been regularly pulled off the shelf since then.  I find it absolutely delightful to read this charming book to my grandchildren!

The Friend Ship

The Friend Ship by Kat Yeh is a book I found while at Powell’s Books in Portland a couple of years ago.  Side note, have you been to Powells?  I can not wait to go back!  Floors and floors of books…  Back to “The Friend Ship” is a gentle reminder of  the truth that sometimes what you’re searching for is right there in front of you.  I just love seeing understanding grow in Miss Joyness eyes each time we read this book together.

Board books!

How do you Say Good Night? by Tommy Nelson and Catalina Echeverri

“Zoey the zebra needed to get ready for bed soon…

This sweet board book follows Zoey the zebra as she searches for the best way to say good night.  What she finds is that different is good, and it’s okay if what is right for you isn’t necessarily right for me.  I love the way this book introduces the concept of celebrating differences.

ABC’s of Physics by Chris Ferrie

Just for “purposeful” fun I picked up this book for my youngest grandson.  Both of his parents are quite science minded, and in the healthcare field.  I chuckled when I saw this book and decided to slip it into Lil Man’s gift bag.  Some time back I studied the way we learn, and about the creating of mental pathways.  I think this book will be a gentle beginning of one of those pathways.

There they are, 5 delightful children’s books that you may want to introduce to the children in your life!

Please tell me in the comments, have you added any of the Baby University books to your home library?

Reading in April, Reading with Grandkids Edition

April 27, 2017 By Michelle

Reading in April

Have I mentioned before how fantastic it is to be a grandmother? Well it is truly fantastic in many ways.  One way in particular is the gift of sharing favorite old stories and finding new ones.   This month I introduced my 4 year old grand daughter to two old favorites, James Herriot’s Animal Stories and also, Brambly Hedge.

Those are two books I delighted in reading to my kids when they were young. And it is a treat to share these stories with Miss Joyness.
